Course Overview

The English and History programme is an exciting and challenging four year degree with extensive career opportunities.  The course enables students to engage in the study of the English language and its literature and to explore the fascinating history of Ireland, Europe and the wider world. Lecturers are highly qualified experts in their fields and deliver a programme that is varied and thought provoking. 

A unique feature of this programme it that for the first two years students have the opportunity to select a number of modules from the wider menu of the Humanities programme, such as Philosophy, Psychology and Theology.

English Component

The English course explores writing from the medieval period right through to the modern world and will bring you on a journey from urban Ireland all the way to the islands of the Caribbean. Students can study Greek tragedies, Romantic Poetry, Gothic Fiction, Modernism and Post-Modernism.

History Component

Our History modules offer students the opportunity to explore ancient, medieval, early modern and modern history through a range of exciting survey and specialist courses. There are opportunities for in-depth study in comparative history, women’s history, local history and twentieth-century history.
