Leaving Certificate
For Level 8 courses at Carlow College applicants must obtain
six passes in the Leaving Certificate to include at least two higher C3’s.
Level 6 and 7 courses require the applicant to achieve five passes in Leaving Certificate. Points will be calculated based on the
best six results achieved in a single sitting of the Leaving
Certificate. For eligibility purposes only, the papers need not
necessarily all be taken in the same year.
Non-Standard Applications
Carlow College considers applications from holders of qualifications other than the Leaving Certificate. Applicants should apply through CAO, ticking the non-standard box on page three of the form. Such applicants will be assessed on an individual basis by the college.
Non-native English speaking applicants are recommended to have a minimum score of 5.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent.
Mature Student Application
Mature applicants are those seeking entry on the basis of
mature years. In order to be considered eligible applicants
must be 23 years of age or over on January 1st of the year of
entry to the course.
Applicants are assessed on the basis of their previous education, work experience and demonstration of ability and competence to undertake the course. They may be called for interview and this will be used to rank applicants.
For the Higher Certificate in Arts in Applied Social Studies in Social Care (PC404), prior to selection for interview applicants will be asked to complete an application form which must include the names of two referees, at least one of whom is from the area of Social Care.
FETAC Application
Applicants must achieve a full FETAC level 5 or 6 award. A record of achievement is not sufficient. A full award may be accumulated over more than one academic year, in such cases, it is the responsibility of the applicant to apply to FETAC for a full award.
The FETAC point score is calculated based on the results of the best eight modules. For modules with a credit value of 1, points are awarded as follows:
Distinction:50 points |
Credit: 35 points |
Pass: 20 points |
Scores are adjusted to take account of modules with credit values other than 1 on a pro-rata basis.
