 NURSE AND MEDICAL CARE

BACK

Students can sometimes put their health low on their list of priorities.  Living away from home and having to look after oneself can be a challenge.

Minor ailments such as colds and sore throats can cause upset and misery that is easily avoidable with prompt treatment and a bit of TLC.

Carlow College provides a free medical service to provide nursing and medical care to students.

The service is provided on-campus by Nurse Maura Hennessy and off-campus by Doctor Gerard Moran.

Our Service

We adopt a holistic approach to student healthcare, incorporating everything from medical treatment to dietary advice, referral for counselling, contraceptive advice or sometimes just a chat.

We aim to provide on-going care for those with chronic medical problems such as asthma and diabetes.

The main services provided by Nurse Maura are:

  • Working to provide a quality healthcare service to all our students.
  • Health Promotion/Education - enabling students to look at their overall health and wellbeing in a responsible and pro-active way.
  • The nurse also works closely with the counsellor and the chaplain as a support and a listening ear to students who may be experiencing difficulties with college life.
  • The nurse provides a link with our off-campus GP service, Dr. Gerard Moran. There are two female GPs - Dr. Sandra Keogh and Dr. Helen Delaney in our doctor's practice for students if they prefer.
  • Nurse Maura also treats sports injuries and if necessary will refer patients for treatment to the doctor's surgery.

Registration

All students are requested to register with Nurse Hennessy. Registration forms are provided in student “induction packs” and students should complete these at registration.

Cost

The nurse’s service is free of charge to all students of Carlow College.

The GP service is charged at a reduced rate of €25 for students who make an appointment through the nurse.

Medical Cards

If you or your parents have a current medical card, attendance at Dr Moran’s surgery is covered as with your own GP.

Sometimes it is easier for students to change medical cards to the local office of the Health Executive Service for the duration of college attendance.

Students aged 23 years and over may apply for a medical card as mature students. This application to the Health Board is means tested.

Application forms for Medical Card and GP only cards are available from the nurse’s office.
