Degree Description
Students who undertake the B.A (Honours) in English & History focus specifically on those two subject areas.
Course Content
In Years One and Two, students take one third of subjects in English, one third in History and one third in Elective subjects. In Year Three, the amount of course work in both English and History increases, and students select one subject from the Elective options on offer. In Year Four, course work focuses exclusively on the two degree subjects, English and History.

English
The study of English Literature at Carlow College encourages students to develop a critically-informed and imaginative approach to the analysis of fiction, poetry, criticism and drama. Courses in Year One and Two include Modern Fiction, Ireland on Stage and Screen, Modern Irish Poetry and History of Drama & Theatre. Years Three and Four include courses such as Modern Drama, Modern Irish Literature and Romantic, Victorian, Modernist and Post Modernist Literature.
History
The study of History at Carlow College aims to develop students’ ability to think in historical terms. This is achieved through courses that focus on the Ancient World, the Renaissance and Reformation and on Modern Ireland and Europe. The programme contains courses covering: The Enlightenment, the American and French revolutions, the struggle for Irish independence and the emergence of modern Europe.

Employers are always interested in taking on graduates who are articulate and well-read, and who can display an ability to ‘think on their feet’. In addition, this course can open up a wide range of post graduate options at Carlow College and in other Irish and overseas colleges and universities.
Students who successfully complete this degree are recognised by the Teaching Council of Ireland for the purpose of teaching English and History at second level, provided they have acquired the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).
