Hello, I'm Monica Dowling, the Placement Co-ordinator for students of Applied Social Studies in Social Care. In each of the two years towards your Higher Certificate and in the further B.A. year, you will work on placement in a variety of Social Care settings. These placements give you an opportunity to practice social care skills; to relate theory to practice; and to look at how this type of work affects you.

In first year, the emphasis is on observation of professional care agency work. Your second year placement concentrates on developing casework skills i.e. identifying and recording needs and responses in social care settings. The B.A. year placement requires you to design and carry out a piece of social care work in the context of your placement.

You will receive preparation, support and back-up from the college before, during, and after the placement. Each student is assigned a professionally qualified supervisor to support and guide him or her through the placement. Assessment is done through supervisors reports, tutor visits and written projects.

Placements are not only valuable learning experiences for students, they are vital to the training of Social Care personnel who often have to deal with the most vulnerable members of our society.
