Part-time Courses

Evening Courses

Creative Writing

Classes take the form of a 2-hour writing-workshop each week in which students receive practical guidance and feedback on their work. The programme includes lectures on Irish writers from Swift to Joyce and beyond, and also feature readings and talks by some of Ireland’s foremost contemporary authors and publishers.

Drama & Theatre Studies

This course provides students with a comprehensive grounding in the theory, history and practice of theatre. Weekly workshops focus on the fundamental elements of the art: acting, set-design, lighting, directing, and writing for theatre. Classes are supplemented by seminars and lecturers which trace the development of drama and theatre in European history and in modern Ireland.

Child Psychology

This course offers an introduction to some of the key writers and theories from the field of child psychology. It focuses on children’s cognitive, social and emotional development from infancy to adolescence. No previous knowledge of child psychology is assumed. This course will appeal to a range of students who have an interest in deepening their understanding of children and childhood.

Hispanic Studies

This course is suitable for beginner and intermediate level students of the Spanish language. As well as weekly language classes, students also explore the cultures of Spain and Latin America through a consideration of Hispanic art, cinema and literature in translation.

‘Christian Faith and Culture’: Introduction to Theology

This is an introductory course to the subject Theology. It examines the relationship between Western culture, the Christian faith, and the fundamental doctrinal beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church. Classes will examine how we define and communicate theology; understanding the relationship between Christian faith and secular culture; the concept of God and the Christian Church; and the nature and practice of Chritian morality.

Ethics

Ethics is a branch of philosophy which examines the morality of human conduct. This course provides an historical and critical survey of ethical thought in the West. Classes will investigate the meaning of ethics, arguments for and against moral absolution an moral relativism, ethics and decision-making, animal rights, and the question of our duties to the developing nations of the world.

All courses are validated by HETAC (The Higher Education and Training Awards Council). The credits earned by students of these courses contribute towards BA Degrees, and other higher level educational programme.
