B.A. HONOURS DEGREE
The B.A. (Hons) in Humanities is recognised by the Registration Council of the Post Primary Teacher’s Section of the Department of Education and by the Register for Intermediate (Secondary) Teachers for the purpose of teaching:
English and / or Religious Education
provided that the subjects Catechetics and Placement and / or English as elective subjects are included in the third and fourth year. (Please note: In order to become a qualified, full-time Secondary School Teacher, one must also acquire the Postgraduate Higher Diploma in Education. This must be applied for via the CAO after successful completion of the B.A. (Hons) in Humanities Course.
B.A. DEGREE
This is an award in its own right. However, students of the B.A. in Humanities who wish to proceed to their B.A. (Hons) should note that each year a number of places on the final year of the B.A. (Hons) Humanities Course is reserved for students who qualify through the B.A.
Humanities graduates find employment in many diverse areas, such as education, radio, television and media in general, administration, civil and community service. Today, large corporations are becoming increasingly interested in employing Humanities students for their quick intelligence, their comprehensive perspective on tackling problems and their trained ability to reason clearly and independently. A Humanities background opens a wide range of post-graduate options in Irish and overseas college and universities.
As part of the Humanities Programme at Carlow, students can choose Catechetics and Placement as an elective subject in third and fourth year.
Please Note: In order to become a qualified, fulltime Secondary School Teacher, one must also acquire the Postgraduate Higher Diploma in Education. This must be applied for via the Post Graduate Applications Centre (www.pac.ie) after successful completion of the B.A in Humanities Degree course.
Should I opt for a Diploma or Degree?
The Humanities programme at Carlow College currently offers two distinct but related courses of study. A three-year B.A. (Ordinary) in Humanities, Philosophy, Theology and Arts (PC 402), and a four-year Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Degree in Humanities (PC 410). Common to both courses is a core of philosophical, theological, social, political and literary subjects. Students also take elective subjects in both courses. There are some different choices of elective subjects on the B.A. (Ordinary) course. The Degree Course demands a more in-depth study of core subjects. Students of the 3-year B.A. (Ordinary) in Humanities can qualify for entry onto the fourth year of studies of the Humanities B.A. (Honours) Degree Programme, if they achieve an overall Merit or better (i.e. 50 %+) in the third year of their B.A. (Ordinary) Award. Diversification and specialisation within the Degree programme is possible. Students plan their route through the Humanities Programme in consultation with the Academic Director and teaching staff of the programme.
