College can be a difficult and complicated time as well as a fun time. You will be faced with many choices: academically, socially, personally, professionally and spiritually. Now, you don't have to face these choices alone as you are welcome to stop into the Chaplain's Office to talk about your cares and concerns, to talk about your day, your struggles or successes in your classes, your relationships, your dreams, your goals, your family and friends, your spirituality and life in general.

Following the Second Vatican Council (1962 - 1965), Carlow College was a leader in implementing liturgical reforms as it served as the second home of the National Centre for Liturgy from 1978 - 1996. Today, liturgical celebrations continue to have a central role within college life as liturgical celebrations are an important time for Carlovians to gather in community and join together in prayer. Liturgical celebrations are celebrated in the College Chapel, a prayer space that is located in South Wing. The main liturgical celebrations are:

  • Opening Mass for the Academic Year celebrated with Bishop Denis Nulty of the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin
  • Remembrance Mass for the deceased
  • Mass for the feast of Immaculate Conception
  • Healing Mass
  • Ash Wednesday Mass and distribution of Ashes
  • Patrons Mass for St Patrick's Day
  • Mass for students and staff bereaved during the academic year (celebrated in the College Cemetery)
  • End of the year Mass

College life can be a stressful time in a students life and sometimes we need an 'escape' from our busy lives to re-focus or put challenging situations into perspective. The Chaplaincy Office offers many opportunities for students to explore their spirituality in an environment that is a place of inclusive and respectful of other belief systems. Throughout the academic term, the Chaplaincy Office sponsors the following prayers services:

  • Prayers services for the bereaved
  • Thanksgiving service
  • Carol service
  • St Brigid's Day/Brigid's crosses/Brigid's festival in Kildare
  • Blessing of the throats

  • Legion of Mary

Music ministry at Carlow College is led by two exceptional musicians, Pádraigín Caesar and Eddie Sheehan, who are both nationally and internationally well-known. Students of musical ability, both musicians and singers, are encouraged to share their gifts and talents in music ministry. The Carlow College choir meets regularly for rehearsals and have an important role at all Carlow College liturgical celebrations. A particular celebration that brings everyone together is the Christmas Carol Singing Session in Carlovian Hall. Musical ministry also extends beyond Carlow College with many of our students involved in diocesan choirs and the Spirit of Kandle.

The central focus of the Chaplaincy Office is to be there for each member of the Carlow College community. As such, there are many resources that are available which can be utilised to deepen one's faith and to come together in community.
