Areas of Interest

Dr Catherine O’Sullivan entered academic life following an earlier career in social work with the HSE specialising in child protection and welfare. In Carlow College she lectures in Sociology, Research Methods, and Advanced Child Care on the degree programmes in Applied Social Studies and Citizenship and Community Studies. Her main research interest lies in women’s participation in third level education. She recently completed her Ph.D. in Trinity College Dublin (2015) entitled ‘Challenges, changes and consequences: women doing a degree at midlife’. Catherine is active in various advocacy groups and has held the position of chairperson of Carlow Women’s Aid for four years. She has also been an active member of Greenpeace. Her current interests include the changing nature of the education system and the impact of technological advancement; sustainable development, and assisted reproductive technologies. She is Programme Board Chair of Applied Social Studies. She is currently preparing her Ph.D. for publication.
